Fraud & Identity Today Week in Review: Revenue Leakage, Mobile Identity, Tax Returns & More

March 25, 2017

Welcome to the week in review, where we take a look at all the top stories making headlines in the mobile fraud space this week.

Next up, TMC’s Laura Stotler looked at some specific cases of identity fraud that have occurred recently. From the UK to India, it doesn’t look like identity fraud is going away anytime soon. However, Laura points out that one of the best ways to fight identity fraud is by using an individual’s phone number. Find out how this often overlooked strategy can be useful HERE.

In other news, we also looked at two different kinds of fraud this week. Steve Anderson dove into the world of OTT voice bypass fraud by discussing a new report from Sandvine. The report notes that one of voice networks' key pieces of technology—signaling system 7 (SS7) connectivity—is opening up potential loopholes for fraudsters to exploit using over the top (OTT) methods. Steve crunches some numbers and provides a full overview of OTT voice bypass fraud HERE.

The final type of fraud discussed this week is relevant to everyone that has a job and pays taxes. Fraudulent tax returns have become increasingly popular lately, with thieves stealing victims’ social security numbers, names and addresses and then completing fraudulent tax returns in their name early in the season before the real owners of the identity have a chance to do so. Luckily, the IRS has caught on, and is using mobile numbers to crack down on this activity. Find out how you can protect yourself HERE.

That’s all for this week. Come back next week to read all the latest fraud-related news.
